My Capstone Journey #4

So I did it, I chose a topic. I conveniently put it off as long as possible because I fear committing myself to something that I don’t love. However, at the end of the day, I still don’t really know where I am going with this or what my project is going to look like—and that’s OK. I think that choosing public transit in Cincinnati is a wildly interesting topic, and there’s already SO much research about it. I’m excited to learn so much in fields beyond just design.

Above is a collage I made that encapsulates my ideas and inspiration for the project. I want to deep dive into the history of Cincinnati’s public transit and how that has shaped what we experience today. I like the visual juxtaposition of the past versus present. As shown through a lot of my brainstormed ideas, I’m also intrigued by language and how that shapes a community. Moving forward, I will try to pursue ways to incorporate my passion for language into this project.

I need to be narrowing my constraints, especially audience and format. I think my next mind map and brainstorming should be around focused problem spaces and possible solution formats. I’m leaning towards a printed report possibly paired with a video, or a multi-media awareness campaign. At the end of the day, I want to communicate how public transit has the power to completely transform a community, even a city and that investment in public transit is vital to a sustainable future and a healthy community. I may need to choose a specific avenue, perhaps focusing just on buses or just on the streetcar. I also need a much more specific audience. I’m not keen on doing students, but it feels to be the most tangible and relatable for me. I will be carefully considering this as I do my preliminary research.

A new mind map I did on impulse after choosing this topic. I surprised myself. There’s a lot to work with and many avenues I could go down for this. The hardest part for me is going to be narrowing down my scope for the project.
Above: A bumper sticker of a car on my street. I remember seeing this months ago and it got me thinking, “what if people were actually excited and encouraged to use public transit?” Anyway, just the other day I saw this car again after months of not seeing it. It felt like a sign.
